ms Nieuw Amsterdam: Overview
Holland America Line Review

The ms Nieuw Amsterdam joined the Holland America fleet in July of 2012. Like the ms Eurodam, HAL wanted to focus on their premium ships setting them apart into a whole new class of cruising comfort. To have guest cruise in comfort, they used the glamor and history of New York City as its inspiration to decorate. They have a significant art collect on board featuring Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Richard Estes. HAL has a complimentary self-guided art tour available for your iPod, which showcases the full collection.

The ms Nieuw Amsterdam will surely take your breath away as you stay in the plush cabins. If you walk around the ship you will see new features like the Silk Lounge, Explorations Cafe to name a few. Also on board you will get lost in relaxation while using the Greenhouse Spa and Salon. This is a favorite amongst guests.

The ms Nieuw Amsterdam is a perfect specimen of what Holland America is doing right. They should use this as an example when creating other ships in the future.

When going on HAL think comfort first, but pack nice clothes for the diner events throughout the week. Comfortable clothes include sports wear, shorts t-shirts to name a few. There is one thing that HAL asks while you are on board. That is if you are traveling between your room and using the pool, please use some sort of cover up while you are in the hallways.

ms Nieuw Amsterdam Atrium

Each day you will be given a itinerary from HAL about the dinner attire. They have three categories that are used, casual, informal and formal. HAL asks that you follow the attire requirement, as all other passengers will be doing the same. For nights that require casual attire, women may wear a sun dress and may may wear a polo and slacks. The informal nights would require women to wear a pants suit or dress and men would be best with a jacket, button up shirt (no tie is required) and slacks. On formal evenings everyone is required to get dressed in their best. Men should be wearing a tux or full suit with tie. Women should be in a gown or cock tail dress.

ms Nieuw Amsterdam: Gratuity

There will be an account set up for you by HAL for each cabin. This will allow you to charge everything you need to the room so that you will not have to deal with money on board. Once the trip is over you may settle the account before disembarking. There will be a per person, per day charge of $10 for dining on board the ship. This charge is automatic to your cabin account. If you desire to use the the bar for wine or alcohol, then a 15% charge will be automatically added to your cabin account. If you feel service was exceptional, you may tip extra for the service provided.
